It feels like politics has become less about sharing ideas and more about attacking those who disagree. Too often, candidates focus on tearing others down rather than explaining and sharing their vision of the future. While negative campaigning may generate attention, it also deepens divisions within our communities.

We must remember that behind every political label is a person. The people we disagree with are still our neighbors, coworkers, friends and fellow citizens. In many cases, elected officials will represent everyone in their community, including those who did not vote for them. That responsibility should encourage respect, not hostility.

Differing viewpoints help us challenge one another and together we may find better solutions. We should never lose sight of the fact that we often share more common ground than we realize. Most people want safe communities, good schools, economic opportunity, and a future for their families.

We can disagree without being disagreeable. We can advocate for our beliefs while treating others with dignity and respect. If we focus less on attacking one another and more on listening, understanding, and finding common ground, our community will be stronger for it.

Our differences define us individually but as a community can challenge us to build a better future for all of us.
